Rise Up! at Pilgrim Kyoto, July 24th - August 7th! 2026

Pilgrim Surf+Supply Kyoto is pleased to present “RISE UP,” a solo exhibition by artist Bill Thelen.

The phrase “RISE UP,” which titles this exhibition, extends beyond a call to resist. It suggests a quieter, more internal movement — a decision to stand, to remain aware, and to stay grounded in one’s own perspective. In a time marked by increasing instability and tension, we are constantly navigating shifting values and realities.

Within that landscape, the act of “rising” can be understood not only as resistance, but as a gesture of awareness, care, and ultimately, a desire for peace.

Bill Thelen’s work carries this sensibility throughout — not as a direct confrontation, but as an invitation to reflect on how we position ourselves in relation to the world. For this exhibition, “rising up” is reframed through everyday gestures and material expressions, including embroidered works, drawings, zines, and other forms.
